Earlier this month a gas line explosion caused a home in Woodlawn, MD to spontaneously combust. The event occurred in the early afternoon and the blast from the explosion caused some form of damage to at least nine surrounding homes. The gas line explosion also caused a 2-alarm fire and caused neighboring Liberty Road to be shut down, including the entrance and exit ramps to the Beltway, I-695. The gas line explosion affected 13 people; luckily, no one was seriously injured.
Baltimore County firefighters responded to the resulting fire at around 2:00 pm Tuesday afternoon. The firefighters and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company checked for damage and dangerous gasses well into the evening. This was the second explosion to occur in two days. In the first explosion, one man was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to the hospital.
Michelle Britt lived behind the house that blew up. She works the night shift and was trying to sleep when the gas line explosion occurred.
I ended up on the floor; face down on the floor.
Not only did the force of the explosion catapult her from sleep, but it also blew photos off the walls, shattered a window, and ripped her backyard door straight off of its hinges.
According to Battalion Chief Lonnie Ledford, this event occurred at a time when most people were elsewhere.
That is phenomenal. It seems like it happened early enough in the day that people were still coming home from work or were not home yet from work, and that would have been a different story had it been a few hours later.
Damage Caused by Unexpected Perils Can be Far-Reaching
The damage caused by this event is horrifying; the gas line explosion triggered a fire, caused massive amounts of debris to slingshot into the air and electricity and power to the neighborhood had to be shut down while an investigation was completed. A backhoe had to be used to remove the remaining pieces of people’s homes. The sheer volume of disruption and devastation inflicted upon these Baltimore county residents is staggering.
People never expect events like this to occur. This is the reason insurance exists–to protect against freak accidents and occurrences. A freak accident is defined as “an incident, especially one that is harmful, occurring under highly unusual and unlikely circumstances”. What would you do if you found yourself in such a situation?
