June 8th is Best Friends Day, the day to honor your bestie! Friends enrich your life in so many ways, and none more so than your BFF. So how will you make your best friend feel special today?
Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest. It’s about who walked into your life, said ‘I’m here for you’, and proved it.
Friends are invaluable, and your best friend is the crown jewel. They listen to you when you need to vent, tell you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it, and are there for you to both celebrate your successes, and commiserate your failures.
They are your partner in crime when you go out adventuring into the big bad world, and are there to nurse you back to health when you feel like you are dying of heartbreak. They want nothing but the best for you, and will hold you accountable when you need to be.
A best friend can weather the storm with you. Even after a terrible fight, a true best friend will be willing to talk to you and work through it. We are all only human after all, and everyone makes mistakes. A true blue best friend will forgive you when you’re wrong, and apologize to you when they are.
Every friendship goes through ups and downs. Dysfunctional patterns set in; external situations cause internal friction; you grow apart and then bounce back together.

So how do you plan to let your best friend know what they mean to you? Here are some suggestions:
- Send them a card or letter: In this era of increasingly electronic-only communication, receiving a piece of snail-mail can be a nice surprise. You don’t always need to celebrate an occasion to send mail–practice the lost art of letter writing, and make your best friend’s day.
- Brag about them on social media: Most people like to get a shout-out every now and then. Unless your best friend doesn’t like a lot of external attention or public scrutiny, this can be a nice way to let your best friend and in fact, the entire world (wide web) know just how great you think they are.
- Participate in a project together: Sign up for a new class, write a song, or even create a company you can co-manage. The possibilities are endless, and you both can contribute something different to a team effort.
As we all walk down our varied paths in life, we may be separated from our best friend by miles, time, other relationships. The bonds of best-friendom persevere through all of this. Your best friend feels like home, and no matter how much time has passed, you can always fit right back into your comfortable groove when you see them again.
