Apartment Fire Destroys Apartment Complex
A Massachusetts apartment complex now lies in ruins after an early morning fire tore through it. The fire, of unknown cause, killed seven people, sent nine to the hospital, and displaced more than 50 people. Called the deadliest Massachusetts fire in two decades, the effects of the fire are widespread. When firefighters arrived on scene, people were already in the process of escaping through second story windows.
Mayor Rodney M. Elliot said that “Today is a tragic day in the city of Lowell with this horrific fire, the entire city mourns the loss.” The fire was reported shortly before 4 AM and discovered by a local police officer while patrolling. It was also called in to 911. The nearby fire department was also notified by people banging on the doors. Even with a fast response and multiple notifications, deaths resulted and the building is a total loss.
It has been said that fire alarms in the building may not have been functional. This is unconfirmed as the investigation is still in process. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Renters Insurance Doesn’t Save Lives, But It Can Help Rebuild Them.
While functional fire alarms may or may not have saved the seven lives lost, those who walked away now face the arduous task of rebuilding their lives. Renters insurance can help with that. From the moment the residents were displaced, renters insurance would have paid for loss of use. This would help with temporary hotel expenses while the apartment is unusable, or until the tenants can relocate to another apartment.
Renters insurance also would have covered the personal property losses, which often are significant. A lifetime’s worth of property can be very, very expensive to replace, especially in one shot. When you have renters insurance, you’re able to get your life back on track quickly.
If it turns out that an individual caused the fire, renters insurance liability coverage also would cover the liability to others resulting from the fire. This is important because otherwise the individual is responsible for the damage to the building, injuries to individuals, and damage to the personal property of everyone affected.
