Pennsylvania renters insurance is important when you live in a city like Pittsburgh, or a suburb like New Castle or Ellwood City. Many people wonder why they need renters insurance in PA.
There are a multitude of reasons, but one of the most important is that there’s simply no accounting for what a neighbor might do if they’re pressed into a tight spot and feel threatened by their situation. The results of a neighbor’s explosive personal situation can have an explosive impact on your own innocent life.
The Ellwood City Ledger brings us a story of a man in a housing complex who simply didn’t feel like taking out the trash and was willing to go to extraordinary lengths to avoid doing so. In his apartment at McGrath Manor, trash is to be taken outside to a common receptacle, just like in most apartments anywhere in the country.
Wallace Peiffer, 19, couldn’t be bothered to take out the trash from his apartment in the 800 block of West Washington Street. So instead, he piled trash in the shower stall of his apartment. Then, he allegedly intentionally disabled the smoke detector. What do you think came next?
Pennsylvania Renters Insurance: Because Your Neighbor Sets Shower Fires
Of course. He set trash on fire in his shower. The story gets weirder from here. According to Peiffer’s statement at the time, he attempted to put out the fire with a soft drink. Remind us, please, where in the apartment he started the fire? Oh, wait, that’s right, it was in his shower. He started the fire directly inside a small contained area with a built-in fire suppression system, namely, the showerhead.
Instead of just turning on the water and pretending the whole thing never happened, he tried to put out the fire with a bottle of soda. When that didn’t work, he ran next door to a neighbor who successfully put the fire out with his own bucket of water. Again, we’re not quite sure why they didn’t just turn the shower on. This is earnestly turning into a Wilde comedy of errors.
We don’t understand the thought process that it would be easier to burn the trash (and potentially the building) than to take the trash outside. But it goes to show that you just never know what you neighbors are doing behind closed doors. If the fire had spread, and melted the shower stall (not difficult) it already would have been burning inside the wall of the apartment, which could have spread it throughout the entire building.
