Terror At Avalon Run
We try to avoid discussing specific instances of crime, because it may not always be representative of the community. In this instance, however, some additional investigation that we performed revealed that the story of terror at Avalon Run that you’re about to read is far from the only instance. After the fire at Avalon Edgewater, this is just one more thing to make residents check the locks on their doors before they go to sleep…
We were alerted to this story via a tipster on social media who had reached out to the community to determine if there was anything he could do to make the management of Avalon Run take action on security. The general consensus is that there’s really not much to be done, so long as they’re not grossly negligent, and they don’t appear to be.
But the story he had to tell was deeply concerning, and other published incidents seem to bear it out, and perhaps even points to a systemic problem. Is it a problem that management could address? That’s open for discussion. Our tipster writes,
Out of 35 buildings in [Avalon Run], the building that we live in has been hit twice by robbers/kidnappers…
The writer is concerned about what the community is doing to prevent these recurring incidents. It seems that in one incident, two men forced entry into a unit and used a knife to kidnap the victim, take him to an ATM, and force him to withdraw money.
Now these are perhaps not very smart criminals, given the cameras on an ATM and the fact that most ATM cards have cash withdrawal limits, so the reward in this scenario is quite limited, but the IQ of the guy holding you at knifepoint is not really at issue here. The fact that people who pay thousands of dollars a month in rent to live in an upscale community are being held at knifepoint at all is the underlying problem here.
We are informed that a second, similar incident occurred on Wednesday, 9 September. That incident was at approximately 12:00 P.M. – in other words, in broad daylight. This time, the men used a gun instead of a knife. The victim was taken to an ATM and then taken to Trenton (of all places) instead of back to his home.
New Jersey renters and Avalon Run residents please take note, only one of the two men involved in this kidnapping and robbery scheme has been apprehended. The other remains on the loose. He is described as black, 20 to 30 years old, between 5-foot-8 and f-foot-10 with a medium build and close-cut hairstyle. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and cargo shorts, according to nj.com
