Does Colorado Springs Renters Insurance Cover Vacation Rentals Or Events Like Weddings? (Trenten Kelley)
It rather depends on what you want to cover.
Your liability coverage could offer some protection, but it would likely only offer protection to you and your new bride (because she’s now a “resident spouse” and therefore insured under the policy automatically). Coverage for damage done by guests to a rented premises is going to be tricky under a standard renters insurance policy. There’s hope, of course, but let’s see what else you might want to consider first.
Damage to property of others coverage would offer a small coverage for damage that you do to something someone else owns. It’s often $500 on Colorado Renters Insurance, so you’re pretty much out of luck there as far as rowdy guests and the like. Your personal property coverage wouldn’t apply to personal property that you don’t own, so there’s no coverage for things in the vacation rental under that coverage.
Your best bet is a wedding or special event policy. It’s a short-term policy that generally can be written by whomever writes your renters insurance and it covers a few specific things. For a very small amount of money, you can get coverage above and beyond your Colorado Springs renters insurance for things such as:
Flaky Vendors – No show, no deposit return? Non-performance? The policy can cover this.
Cancellations – Never something you want to think about, but these policies can offer coverage for cancellations under certain circumstances, and could even pay the rest of the contract with certain vendors.
Injuries To Guests At The Event – This is a big one, because even if the guest has health insurance, their insurance will come after whomever is responsible. That probably means the owner of the rental as well as you, because you rented it and held the event. Medical bills and the cost of defending against a suit like that from a health insurer or an uninsured guest can be astronomical, and the policy can cover these losses so that you don’t have to start your marriage out deeply in debt by paying for someone else’s drunken broken bone.
Damages To Rented Premises – Check your policy language, of course, but these policies often can pay for accidental damage to rented premises as a result of the event. Whether that’s from an angry guest, a drunken guest, or a just plain negligent guest, you could have coverage.
Liquor Liability – This is often an add-on to special event policies, and your Colorado Springs renters insurance is unlikely to offer coverage for an event not in your apartment. This protects you if someone is over-served at your event and goes out and does harm to someone else as a result. Drunken brawl on premises? DUI after they leave? Both could result in you being sued for a not insignificant amount of money.
