Not all identity fraud is for financial reasons.
One man has had his life crushed by identity fraud, and he’s having more than a little difficulty resolving the problem. In 2006, someone decided to start using Wesley Taylor’s name. Someone to whom that name did not belong. The man using his name wasn’t emptying his bank accounts, or even buying houses in his name and letting them be foreclosed on. No, the man using Wesley Taylor’s name was involved in something much more sinister with much more serious repercussions.
Today, in a lawsuit against the city he actually lives in, Taylor says that this identity theft has prevented him from being employable. It has cost him the ability to get a carry permit. It has even led to the suspension of his drivers license. All because a man claiming to be Wesley Taylor was out committing crimes in his name for years.
The real Mr. Taylor is the sort of person you’d want to have a beer with. But the crimes that comes up under his name might give you pause. He told The Republic that “You see me as a gun-toting, arrest-resisting murderer.”
In 2006, Taylor’s wallet was stolen. In 2008, he was pulled over by pure chance, and informed that there was a warrant for his arrest in Detroit. Taylor maintains that he has never set foot in Detroit. Taylor was informed later that year that someone using his name was facing a number of charges, including drug charges. He took the time to go to the police station, get fingerprinted, and verify that he was not the person in question.
His drivers license was revoked because of some of the charges, though it has now been reinstated. Keeping a job has been tough for Taylor because these crimes that he did not commit are still tarnishing his name. He finally filed a lawsuit in an effort to permanently correct the mistake, because his most recent job was only available to him after showing reams of paperwork proving the problem.
