By now, you’ve probably figured out that Effective Coverage is a national renters insurance provider. But do you know why we create these renters insurance guides? Only forty-four percent of Americans have renters insurance, and that’s troubling, to say the least. On a daily basis, we see a crowdfunding effort for someone who has suffered an apartment fire or a similar level of loss. While it’s heartwarming to see the community response to such things, they wouldn’t be necessary if everyone had renters insurance. State College renters insurance is the best way to protect yourself from the very real risk of apartment fires, burglaries, and other unpleasant events, but most people don’t even know the coverage is available. That’s why we engage in education efforts nationwide, and that’s why education is part of our core values. You’ll be surprised to learn that the coverage is easily available, and that you can easily afford it – even on a college student budget.
Why would you work with Effective Coverage for State College, PA renters insurance? That’s an easy answer. Effective Coverage is the only company in the nation that focuses on the insurance needs of renters that offers a full line of insurance products and services. What Does State College, PA Renters Insurance Personal Property Coverage Protect?
State College renters insurance personal property coverage protects just about everything you own! In the interest of full disclosure, since insurance companies operate in multiple states, they are subject to Federal jurisdiction. That means there are certain things which may now or in the future become legal in PA but remain technically illegal at the Federal level which would not be covered by insurance, for obvious reasons. Putting aside those things, however, think about how much furniture you have, your television, your tablet, your phone, and all of the other things you’ve accumulated. Even if you’re a student and everything you own is secondhand, you’ll find that the coverage offers replacement cost.
Replacement cost on State College renters insurance means that you can be sure you’ll have the money you need to go buy a new item if it suffers a loss. Just because your couch is a hand-me-down doesn’t mean you’ll want to shop at a thrift store for a new one – you’ll want the amount of money that makes you whole and allows you to go buy a new couch of like kind and quality. Someone else’s used couch won’t make you whole, in that instance.
A better question than “what does it protect” would be to ask what does renters insurance in State College protect against? That’s actually a rather lengthy list, and you can find renters insurance covered perils on another page, but here is a short list of some of the most common perils that are protected against:
- Fire
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Windstorm or Hail damage resulting in damage to personal property
That’s only a partial list of what personal property coverage can respond to. The coverage is broad, and there are limited exclusions for obvious things, such as damage you do to your own property or a loss that you should have known would occur – if you walk away from your laptop in a coffee shop and someone walks off with it, there may be coverage, but you have a responsibility to make sure that you’re taking the necessary steps to protect your property. The definition of “reasonable” is fairly broad, however.
What Does Liability Coverage Respond To On Renters Insurance In State College, PA?
The easy answer is “bodily injury or property damage” which results from your negligence. If you knew or should have known that harm would result from your actions, but did not take steps to prevent it, you may have been negligent. There’s a key dividing line there, however. If it’s an action that you should have reasonably foreseen would cause harm, such as punching someone in the face, liability doesn’t cover you because there’s not negligence. This is true even if the harm was not expected or intended.
If you were to accidentally start a fire in your apartment because you left a hot plate on, that would be negligence and liability coverage could protect you from the landlord and other residents suing you. If you bump into someone and make them drop their phone, that could be covered as well. The latter example might well fall under the $500 damage to property of others coverage. That’s a no fault coverage designed to make small problems go away quickly. More than likely, it’s a coverage that you didn’t even know existed. That’s a perfect example of why it’s important to work with State College renters insurance experts, because there are types of coverage in the policy that most people aren’t aware of and that coverage can offer significant protection in a multitude of odd situations where you might otherwise end up coughing up a great deal of cash to make a problem go away.
Should you offer cash instead of letting someone make a liability claim on your renters insurance policy? No, no, and no. Never. Absolutely not under any circumstances. Why? Because doing so doesn’t put the claim to rest. They could come back and make a claim anyway, potentially. Worse, by trying to take care of it on your own, you lose the protections of the policy. Your renters insurance in State College doesn’t just pay the liability claim, it also pays to defend you against that claim. In that case, even though the insurance carrier is paying for it, the lawyer is your lawyer and subject to the same protections and duty to you as they otherwise would be if you paid them out-of-pocket. This offers significant additional protection against that claim, whether you’re actually liable or not. Remember that people will sometimes make a claim just to make a fast buck, and that defense will help you avoid those situations.

Renting In State College, PA
State College, PA lies in Centre County, which (oddly enough) is more or less in the very middle of Pennsylvania. State College was ranked as the third safest metropolitan area in the United States by CQ Press. Led by Mayor Elizabeth Goreham, State College has a rich history since its incorporation in 1896. The city itself covers well over four square miles and sits at approximately 1,100 feet of elevation. Home to more than 40,000 people, and with over 150,000 people in the metro area, State College is a large city in its own right. The academic and intellectual prowess brought by Pennsylvania State University is an additional bonus, giving the city even more to offer.
State College was originally the home of the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania, founded in the mid-1800s. Almost 100 years later, it became the Pennsylvania State University. Technically, addresses are located in University Park, PA, and served by zip code 16802, but most people just refer to it as “State College.” Area code 814 serves the city and its surroundings, abutting 570, 717, 412/878, and 724/878, and stretching south to Maryland where it meets 301/240 and north to New York where it meets 716 and 585. A split to allow State College to keep 814 was proposed in 2009, which would have left the Erie, PA area with the new area code 582. This was unpopular, to say the least, and the plan was replaced with an overlay plan where both area codes would have served the entire current geographic area. The split was determined to be unnecessary for the time being, as NPA exhaust is not expected until early 2018.814 was issued in 1947, along with the rest of the original area codes, of which Pennsylvania had four.
State College is a great place to live, with enough diversity to keep anyone happy. With over 9,000 people per square mile, the city is one of the more dense areas in the state. Roughly ten percent of households have children under 18 living with them, and the average family size is 2.71. Median income for a family is approximately $59,000 and with the low cost of living, that money goes significantly farther than it might elsewhere in the state. These factors combine to make State College both quite livable and a good place to raise children and families. Local schools are well-regarded. Psychology Today magazine once conducted a survey determining that State College was one of the least stressful places to live in the United States, earning it the nickname “Happy Valley.” If you’re into music, Rolling Stone has given an honorable mention to State College as one of the best cities for music in the country. This puts State College on par with larger cities like Austin, TX.
If you like sports, you’ll love State College. Penn State’s Nittany Lions are the Official Team Of Everyone Who Has Ever Passed Through Pennsylvania. Penn State has a baseball team, as well, which shares a stadium with a minor league team, the State College Spikes. Arts and Entertainment are also important here. Whether you’re attending Movin’ On, with free music to celebrate graduation and the end of the spring term, First Night on New Year’s Eve, or the Central PA Arts Fest, you’ll always be able to find something to do here.
State College has also given the country quite a few famous people. Stan Belinda, a former baseball pitcher, Larry Johnson, an NFL running back, Matt Rhule who coaches football at Temple, Brian Blanchard who sits on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, Gretchen Morgenson who writes for the NY Times, and even the Pixar animator Doug Sweetland all hail from the city.
You’ll find plenty to do and plenty to keep you interested in State College. Many people come for school and stay for the city itself, and more people come here because it’s a great place to live.
